The Fuller Project is the global newsroom dedicated to groundbreaking reporting that catalyzes positive change for women. Since we launched in 2015, our reporting has helped end life-threatening practices, led to large scale releases of public data and prompted the introduction of new legislation.

We report exclusive stories centered on women that otherwise would not be told. Our long-standing focus on women, especially those facing racial or other forms of bias, leads to journalism that – by challenging conventional thinking – inspires action. Our reporting is relied on by policymakers, corporate leaders, influencers and individual across the globe, leading to better outcomes for women and their communities. As women’s standing in society improves, so does the potential for stronger democracies and economic and political stability. A single authoritative story about women can create awareness, inspire action and spark change.

Our journalists spotlight critical issues and expose injustice with in-depth reporting published in renowned news outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME and Foreign Policy. Partnering with legacy news outlets ensures our rigorous reporting reaches the broadest global audiences, shining a spotlight on how to solve the critical issues women face around the world. Our reporters work hand-in-hand with journalists inside the largest and most respected newsrooms from Afghanistan to India to Kenya, leading to reporting that is globally relevant and grounded in the realities of local women.

This role

We are seeking a California-based enterprise and accountability bureau chief to join a fast-growing global nonprofit newsroom to produce surprising, in-depth pieces from one of the country’s most economically, racially and ethnically diverse states. The ideal person for the role of California Bureau Chief is versatile and curious, a digger who relishes going beyond surface reporting and a strong writer who appreciates the need for clear and compelling narratives; tracing the roots of these challenges and holding those responsible accountable is a must. Five to seven years of enterprise reporting in California and/or a strong body of enterprise and accountability work is required. This position reports to the Senior Editor/Americas. The California Bureau Chief may eventually manage at least one staff reporter and help to coordinate the work of freelance journalists in the region.

Key responsibilities include:

• Identifying new, surprising and rich ideas that unearth disparate or unique challenges experienced by women in California that could also speak to similar challenges faced by women in other parts of the country or the world.

• Produce long-form narratives driven by deep, authoritative reporting, including data, in The Fuller Project’s four authority areas – climate change/environment, labor and economics, health and women-led movements aimed at changing the status quo.

• Devising and executing ambitious investigations with the potential to lead the news agenda, spur accountability and drive impact, including policy change.

• Collaborating with The Fuller Project colleagues on regional or global stories and occasionally contributing to other newsroom initiatives such as our newsletter or social posts.

• The California Bureau Chief will be called on periodically to speak about The Fuller Project’s work in various public settings.

Requirements:

• Five to seven+ years of experience reporting and writing long-form enterprise or investigative pieces.

• Experience working in California and a solid grasp of the political, legal, policy and cultural forces that impact women’s opportunities, security and health.

• Strong reporting and analytical skills that resulted in a body of work that includes strong enterprise or investigative pieces

•  Proven track record of successful collaborations with colleagues across the newsroom

• Passion for and demonstrated commitment to the mission and core values of The Fuller Project

• Ability to deal with ambiguity and work independently in a remote environment

• Ability to work productively in an independent environment, guided by journalism ethics, and in a nonprofit newsroom

• Editing or management experience is a plus

• Travel required for reporting and for organizational events or gatherings
