The Record-Journal in Meriden, Connecticut is currently seeking a full time Newspaper Paginator to join our editorial team. This position is scheduled for 40 hours per week in the afternoons/evenings Monday-Friday. The ideal candidate may also be expected to fill in on other days of the week, on an as needed basis.
This position is hybrid with both remote and in office work available depending on the preferences of the candidate and the needs of the department. The employee will need to be within commuting distance of our office in Meriden, CT.
The main function of this position is laying out and paginating newspaper pages electronically. Pagination and layout experience is required.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Responsible for ensuring that articles are accurate, grammatical, and coherent, and are presented on pages in a readable manner.
- Lay out and paginate pages electronically.
- Edit stories for accuracy, grammar, and overall content.
- Communicate with reporters and editors to clarify questions and issues.
- Write headlines and edit photo captions.
- Responsible for online/multimedia work as assigned.
- Send finished pages electronically to the printer, e-paper vendor, and archive.
Knowledge of reporting and editing and a background in journalism normally acquired through the completion of a degree.
Pagination and layout experience required.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
Comfortable with computer use and learning new technologies; ability to crop photos, excellent writing, and verbal skills; strong working knowledge of English grammar and AP style rules; tactfully explain editing decisions; ability to find trouble spots in a story; flair for language (headlines and captions). Interest in editorials/opinion section is a plus.
