Job Description:

New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) is seeking recent graduates who aspire to a career in public media to join our team as a fellow.  The fellow will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of talk show production working on our daily public affairs program, The Exchange.

About the position

Working alongside experienced producers and journalists, the fellow will learn about writing for radio and will develop producing, research, and interviewing skills. They will learn to pitch show ideas, conduct research, pre-interview guests, edit and produce audio pieces for broadcast, screen calls, and write promos. They will contribute to the program's digital content and help choose newscast items. The fellow will also work closely with the host and others to write scripts and help shape on-air conversations. By the end of the fellowship, they will have independently produced and directed several shows.

The fellowship is a full-time, eight month position. Fellows receive a stipend of $25,000 plus benefits, including company-paid individual health and dental insurance and paid vacation, sick time, and holidays. This position is based in Concord, New Hampshire. With beaches, lakes, cities, and mountains, New Hampshire is both a beautiful and dynamic place to live.

NHPR is committed to mentoring our fellows, including candidates from untraditional professional backgrounds, and helping them develop as journalists and leaders. Fellows will have the opportunity to attend professional training or a conference during the fellowship.

About the station

NHPR is New Hampshire's independent and trusted source for news and information, and the state's largest radio news service.  Based in Concord, the state's capital and political hub, NHPR's newsroom, digital team, and original programs consistently earn national recognition for their in-depth reporting and production. NHPR is the winner of the 2015, 2017, and 2018 national Edward R. Murrow Award for overall excellence.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate aspires to a career in public media and has excellent writing and organizational skills, good news judgment and an interest in politics and public policy. Some experience in journalism and digital and social media is desirable. The fellowship is open to applicants who completed their undergraduate or graduate degrees within the past three years. We believe that we can produce the best content with a team from a range of backgrounds, with different skills, experiences, and passions. NHPR encourages candidates from groups historically underrepresented in our industry to apply.

Application Process

Please submit:

  • A cover letter that explains your interest in the fellowship
  • Your résumé
  • A written professional or academic reference, which you can upload with your application or send to fellowship@nhpr.org
  • Two examples of your work, such as a writing sample of 1,000 words or less; excerpt from a video or radio production; or other creative work.
