California-Based Full-Time Staff Reporter
InsideClimate News is seeking an experienced, enterprising journalist based in California to report on agriculture and its intersection with climate, energy and environmental issues.
The reporter will also be establishing and leading the West Coast hub of ICN's environment reporting network, convening and collaborating with fellow California journalists covering the state's complex farming industry. It would be the fourth of five hubs that we are opening to strengthen local reporting on climate and the environment in regions around the country in collaboration with local media.
The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of California agriculture and climate-related issues, as well as sources in politics and across farming and environmental groups. This is an exciting opportunity to expand ICN's National Environment Report Network and deepen our agricultural coverage in the country's most dynamic and profitable farming state at the forefront of climate policymaking.
From our West Coast hub we will publish a steady body of work illuminating the tension between present agricultural policy and practice and future need in the face of climate change. We will examine the mounting threats of farming-as-usual as well as agriculture as a source of climate solutions. We will shine a spotlight on the people and institutions responding to climate challenges and the actors in both industry and government resisting change -- all of this understood in the context of complex inter-related subjects: water, immigration, health and social justice.
Three other reporting hubs are already up and running -- in the Southeast, the Midwest and the Mountain West, where our reporters are filing impactful and meaningful stories for ICN while convening meetings and working on collaborative projects with local news organizations.
We're looking for a self-starter who is able to work independently, write with authority and edge. You should live in the region —or have lived there previously, and be eager to move back.
This is a chance to be part of a team that has become a leader in deep reporting on climate change accountability and the intersection of climate change and agriculture. We prize accuracy, creativity, clarity, flexibility, adherence to deadlines, good news judgment and a strong work ethic. An ability to excel in the culture of an entrepreneurial and collaborative news organization is a must.
Founded in 2007, InsideClimate News is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan news organization that covers clean energy, carbon energy, nuclear energy, agriculture and environmental science—plus the territory in between where law, policy and public opinion are shaped. Already one of the largest environmental newsrooms in the country with 19 full-time staff, ICN is committed to establishing a permanent national reporting network, to training the next generation of journalists, and to strengthening the practice of environmental journalism.
Our operation is largely virtual: We have a nucleus in New York, a presence in Washington D.C., Boston, and Chicago and staff working from California to Maine. Our newsroom has always been driven by self-starters. Our reporters bring bring decades of experience from leading media organizations, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, ProPublica, Los Angeles Times, Bloomberg News and Frontline. Others come from top programs for science writing and investigative journalism, among other backgrounds. Good ideas propel the operation, wherever they originate.
We have a supportive culture of collaboration and high standards of professionalism. At our core, we are motivated by accountability journalism and storytelling that has the impact to improve the public interest. We have earned national recognition for our work and many of the most prestigious awards in journalism, including the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting (2013) and recognition as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (2016).
