Host/Reporter – WBHM in Birmingham
At WBHM, we believe in the power of public media to inform and engage our community and make it a better place. Our ambitious and growing news team in Birmingham needs an All Things Considered host who can also tell compelling stories as a general assignment reporter. Come live and work in a diverse city that was forged in steel and the struggles of the Civil Rights movement. Birmingham is now a thriving metro area with a booming medical research university and dynamic financial, tech and services sectors. It is a city of historic neighborhoods with great music, a vibrant fine arts community, nearby lakes and hiking trails, and a world-class food scene (it is on just about everybody’s list of America’s top food cities). We’re a big city with all the amenities, but with a small-town feel.
You’ll be responsible for hosting All Things Considered from 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday. As a reporter, you’ll produce NPR-quality local stories on-air, online and on social media. You’ll help reflect and lead conversations on topics that are vital and relevant to Birmingham and Alabama. Participation in on-air fund drives, occasional fill-in work including the Morning Edition shift, and some recording of automation breaks are required. This position reports to the Program Director and the News Director.
WBHM is an award-winning station with a strong commitment to local news and public affairs. Our reporters routinely win regional and national honors and, in addition to serving our local audience, their stories are regularly aired on national programs.
