Data Editor

About us

The Fuller Project is the global nonprofit newsroom dedicated to groundbreaking journalism about women to raise awareness, expose injustice, and spur accountability. Our vision is journalism that fully represents all women, giving readers The Full Story, and spurring gender equality.

Our reporters around the globe rigorously report on untold stories and the interconnected issues affecting women and their communities everywhere. Our reporting often leads the news cycle and is published in prominent outlets, bringing the full story to a large and diverse audience.

Since 2015, our team has published hundreds of articles and reached millions of readers. In the past year, we reported on stories such as: gas flaring in the Niger delta and its health and economic effects on women in the region, the continuing effects of COVID-19 on women across the world, and links between domestic violence and extreme weather.

About the role

We are seeking a Data Editor to join a fast-growing global nonprofit newsroom. The ideal person for the role is someone who has two to five years of dedicated data journalism experience, is someone who is comfortable gathering, scrubbing, and analyzing large data sets, understands how data can tell or advance a story, and has worked alongside reporters and other editors to identify, find, and build the data visualizations needed to complement investigative news stories. This position reports to the Managing Editor. The position has potential to eventually manage at least one data reporter or freelance data reporter.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead data-gathering and analysis effort for an annual multi-part, multimedia data-driven series, bringing a skeptical, probing approach to data provenance to ensure accuracy.
  • Collaborate with editors and reporters to gather and analyze data and produce visualizations for enterprise, investigative and feature articles published throughout the year.
  • Advise fellow editors and reporters on relevant datasets available to support their stories and how to translate and incorporate data into a story.
  • Take the lead on distributing, gathering responses and creating data visualizations for quarterly surveys. The topics, questions and survey targets will be determined in collaboration with editors and reporters.
  • Create and maintain systems for storing and sharing code and data.
  • Identify and maintain additional systems for data storage, analysis, and visualizations.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with global data sets, statistics, and statistical analysis tools, as well as ready knowledge of datasets that reporters can use
  • Familiarity with data scraping – obtaining and analyzing data primarily from Internet open sources
  • Familiarity with data analysis software such as Python, R or SQL
  • Some experience with FOIA and negotiating for data
  • Familiarity with version control tools such as GitHub
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools such as DataWrapper
  • Some knowledge of HTML, CSS or Java Scripts and its libraries
  • Proven track record of successful collaborations with colleagues across the newsroom
  • Passion for and demonstrated commitment to the mission and core values of The Fuller Project
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and work independently in a remote environment
  • Ability to work productively in an independent environment, guided by journalism ethics, and in a nonprofit newsroom
  • This is a stationary position requiring the ability to remain seated for extended periods of time
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside their office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

This is a remote position. The ideal candidate will be based in the Washington D.C. area and be available for hybrid work, but candidates outside of the DC-metro area will also be considered. However, candidates must be based in the US. This is a full-time exempt position with benefits, including:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid parental leave
  • Retirement plan
  • Generous vacation policy, plus flexible and inclusive holiday schedule
  • Phone and communications stipend
  • Technology benefits, such as a company-provided laptop
  • A commitment to an inclusive and diverse work culture
  • Professional learning and development opportunities
