DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

GBH News is a multiplatform local newsroom headquartered in Boston. Through in-depth, high-quality journalism, our goal is to inform, educate, and enlighten our audience. We cover the immediate news of the day and issues and developments that shape our community and culture. GBH News broadcasts and streams local, national, and international news, produces local talk shows and publishes a wide variety of locally sourced news online. We aim to reflect the diverse communities we serve in our journalism and newsroom culture.

JOB OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Managing Editor, GBH News is seeking a Features Editor to help us reimagine a features story pipeline and publishing strategy that pops across digital, radio, and TV. This exciting opportunity to help  Boston's fastest-growing newsroom expand its commitment to in-depth, long-form, local storytelling. The features editor should have a sharp ear and eye for original stories steeped in our region's unique history, culture, energy, and sensibilities. We are seeking an editor who is hungry to help us uncover and tell distinctive, local stories infused and informed by the diverse communities we serve. We're looking for an editor who can balance the immediate with the long term: to nimbly adjust stories for breaking news across online, radio, and social media while developing longer-term assignments and projects for those same mediums.

The ideal candidate should be a creative thinker who understands the audiences we are trying to reach and approaches local journalism with a fresh perspective so that those audiences see themselves in our journalism.

In addition, the features editor should be a multiplatform journalist who understands what makes features work across digital, radio, and TV platforms and can help reporters and editors to hone their storytelling skills for each platform.

The Features Editor must be highly organized, able to juggle multiple stories and deadlines at once while ensuring the highest quality and best practices across all assignments. As key members of the newsroom's senior team, they must also have excellent management, communication, and leadership skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify and greenlight strong features stories for our weekly pipeline across radio, digital, and TV

  • Work with reporters and other editors to develop and assign features stories, from ideation through assignment and publication

  • Create and manage features planning grid and set and uphold deadlines against it

  • Edit features assignments, working with editors and reporters to uphold our high journalistic standards and ethics across all platforms

  • Work with external partners and collaborators to bring more diverse audiences into our storytelling and amplify our features work

  • Manage problems as they arise and suggest creative solutions to ensure our features land regularly and with power
