WUNC American Homefront Social Media Intern – Temporary Part-Time

North Carolina Public Radio WUNC, Chapel Hill


WUNC is searching for a social media intern who can oversee and implement social media activities for the American Homefront Project, a collaborative journalism project of WUNC, KPBS in San Diego, Texas Public Radio, St. Louis Public Radio, and WSHU in Fairfield, Connecticut.  The project reports on military and veterans' issues for a national audience.


-Develop a vibrant social media presence for the American Homefront Project.

-Engage the project’s audience and potential audience in a variety of social media channels.

-Leverage social media platforms to build audience for American Homefront content.

-Monitor military and veterans coverage from other news media to share on social media.

-Coordinate with the American Homefront editor and reporters as they develop stories, aligning social media activities with journalism agenda.

-Help journalists, producers, and editors to use social media to develop audience, find sources, and enhance listener participation.

-Help maintain key social media metrics to assess the Project’s social media success.

-Ensure that all materials produced meet accepted journalistic standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness, honesty, and impartiality.

-Must be able to work varied shifts and respond to breaking news events.

-Perform other duties as assigned.

This position is intended for a college student or recent graduate and is 100% grant funded.




High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience related to the area of assignment in a broadcast television, radio and emerging media environment: or equivalent combination of training and experience.  Essential skills:  Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Proficiency with standard spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style.  Understanding of journalistic practices, journalistic ethics and public radio’s core values.

Preferred Qualifications:

Military experience strongly preferred, but not required.  Significant experience and expertise engaging in social media and other online platforms.  Familiarity with social media platforms frequented by military personnel and veterans.  Familiarity with public radio.
