DePauw University seeks an outstanding journalist and gifted teacher for the position of Eugene S. Pulliam Distinguished Visiting Professor of Journalism for a one year term with the possibility of renewal, to begin August 2022.
The Pulliam Professor will work closely with bright, spirited, hard-working undergraduates, and their faculty mentors, as they gain hands-on experience at our award-winning student media organizations (The DePauw newspaper, WGRE radio station and D3TV campus cable station). A commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts setting and evidence of effective and inclusive teaching are essential as are excellent journalistic skills, a passion for teaching and mentoring, and a strong understanding of journalism’s role in democracy and the cultural and social impact of journalism around the globe.
Teaching two courses during the academic year within our Media Fellows Program or in the Pulliam Professor’s field of expertise
Contributing to the Media Fellows Program by serving as an ex-officio member of the Media Fellows Steering Committee.
Coaching or advising Media Fellows students and members of the student media, at their request, on the practice of journalism and careers in journalism.
Contributing to the programming for the Media Fellows Program and the University by participating in public and campus-wide forums on topics relevant to journalism, or by bringing to campus visitors that can contribute to such programming.
Contributing, in coordination with the Director of the Pulliam Center, to a reframing of journalism at DePauw, to align with the five-year Bold and Gold Strategic Plan
This position includes a generous budget for the Pulliam Professor’s professional development or research activities, including travel expenses, and/or for programming, such as hosting speakers and discussion groups.
The Eugene S. Pulliam Distinguished Visiting Professor in Journalism is named in memory of Eugene S. Pulliam, a 1935 DePauw graduate and publisher of the Indianapolis Star and Indianapolis News. The fund was established with a gift from his wife, Jane, and his three children, Myrta, Russell, and Deborah. Income from the fund is used to bring a distinguished journalist who can contribute to the serious consideration of journalism in our society to teach at DePauw for a semester or year at a time. The Pulliam Professor may also be invited to meet with one of the donors, Myrta J. Pulliam, should she visit campus during your term. Ms. Pulliam is a member of the DePauw University Board of Trustees.
