The News Editor manages day-to-day news coverage from the Southern Connecticut Region focused on Fairfield County; and works with editors and reporters to develop ideas for features, daily spots, interviews and digital content. Collaborates with the Executive Editor and Senior Editor News on developing coverage priorities and newsroom growth. Helps define and maintain ethical, editorial, artistic and technical standards for broadcast news. Manages the Fairfield newsroom, Midday newscasts and regional reporters as assigned.
The Editor provides a wide range of services. Applicants must have the ability to complete the following essential job functions:
- Coordinates with the Senior Editor and Where We Live team to connect news items and the involvement of reporters on the show.
- Ensures reporters are focusing on significant topics that support the overall direction of CT Public News and meet our standards for journalistic excellence.
- Leads and coordinates daily news planning and discussions with the news management team, to set direction and tone of content.
- Manages and directs our Hartford and New Haven news.
- Meets CT Public’s News state-wide editorial agenda, both short and long-term.
- Records and edits audio; produces and mixes content using audio equipment and digital editing software and compiles and edits material necessary for production.
- Regularly reviews and provides constructive feedback on CT Public’s News content.
- Seeks opportunities to produce quick-turn deep reporting on breaking news situations.
- Supervises Fairfield daily news editor and is primary editor as needed on radio features, daily news, and interviews. Includes assigning stories, approving pitches, and editing, working with reporters to ensure thorough coverage and best use of all platforms.
- Works with Executive Editor on long-term planning to develop CT Public news goals across all platforms.

The Editor has many responsibilities. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Anticipates special news events (and major stories) and create plan for coverage.
- Carries out office responsibilities, is readily available for collaboration and consultation within the department and across the organization, and to fills in editing daily material as circumstances require.
- Coaches’ reporters and editors on developing project ideas, reporting techniques, and in delivering the finished project to our audiences.
- Coordinates with editorial and team leaders on newsletter, digital and linear TV/Radio strategies around each project.
- Ensures all direct reports are evaluated following the principles established under CT Public performance management process.
- Follows CT Public ethics guidelines, and helps reporters adhere to those same ethical standards.
- Other duties as assigned, including on-air fundraising.
- Sets goals with staff and ensures developmental and professional development needs are met.
- Works with the Executive Editor to assess Fairfield newsroom progress on goals and determine resource and professional development needs.

The Editor position is based in Fairfield County and will work on a hybrid schedule that includes office, field, and remote work We expect this position to routinely visit the Hartford headquarters. This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Some travel within the state and to our geographically-separated offices may be required.

The physical activities of this position may include in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks. Must have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing words and paragraphs, viewing a computer terminal, or extensive reading. The typical physical requirements are: light work—exerting up to 25lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 10lbs of force frequently and may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, salary exempt position. Days and hours of work vary, but often run Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Editor should expect non-standard working hours akin to evening, weekend, and holiday support depending on the operational tempo.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or other closely relatable field AND five (5) or more years’ direct and sustained professional journalism experience AND/OR a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Public radio experience preferred and we see a strong record of achievement in reporting, editing, and leading teams.
