Job Description:

Injustice Watch seeks a senior reporter to cover the judicial system in Cook County and Illinois. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of the court system, experience covering issues of equity and justice, and a track record of using enterprise and investigative techniques. We’re looking for someone who is able to translate legalese, government and political jargon into clean copy that tells the reader what’s important, while also listening to and centering communities disproportionately affected by the justice system.

We expect the reporter to provide beat reporting that regularly yields breaking news, analysis, explainers, and features while also contributing to long-term special projects that shed light on the judiciary, including our judicial election guides and collaborative data journalism project, The Circuit. The reporter will be expected to play a leadership role on projects related to their beat, and also support our organization’s ongoing mentorship programs.

The ideal candidate will be open to learning new skills to fulfill expectations for the role and eager to work collaboratively on team projects and with our community partners. The reporter will also collaborate with Injustice Watch’s engagement team to connect readers with our vital public service journalism.

Please apply using this application form by 11:59 pm on Monday, May 31. Email jobs@injusticewatch.org if you have any questions.

Skills:
We’re looking for someone with:

- 5 or more years of reporting experience, a deep understanding of the field, and established sources.
- An investigative mindset, with excellent storytelling, research, and interview skills.
- An ability to articulate how systems have shaped policy, governance, culture, and inequity in the U.S., and understand critical issues driving current social movements.
- A commitment to maintaining an ethical, honest, accurate, and fair standard in their work.
- A strong command of AP style and grammar; ability to produce content that is clean, accurate, and “publication ready” on deadline.
- Experience using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to enhance reporting and promote stories.
- Proficiency in basic word processing and spreadsheet programs like those included in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
- A desire to contribute to an equitable and inclusive organizational culture.

While nothing below is a requirement, it’s a plus if you are:

- Proficient in wrangling large datasets using Excel or programming languages like SQL, R or Python.
- Knowledgeable about Chicagoland history, politics, institutions, and communities.
- Experienced in leading reporting projects or collaborative work.
- Purpose-driven in your work with a strong ability to self-manage in the workplace.
- Able to show a track record of producing watchdog journalism that has an impact.
- Adept at using social media, SEO, and other strategies to draw in audiences.

We recognize that there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who have skills and valuable experiences we haven’t named here. If that’s you and you’re on the fence about pursuing this opportunity, please don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. We also encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities.
