SoCoNews seeking journalist to cover local diversity and equity issues
One of the chief initiatives of our Sonoma County Local News Initiative, a nonprofit that is now taking over the local news operations from Sonoma West Publishers, is to expand our news coverage of previously under-reported stories, and issues of equity, inclusion and social justice.
To that end, we are now accepting applications from qualified journalists with community news experience, who have demonstrated a prior experience in issues surrounding equity, multiple cultures and ethnicities. We are seeking a bilingual, bicultural Latina/Latino reporter
The ideal candidate will possess strong news gathering and storytelling skills with an emphasis on uncovering under-reported news, and engaging in community outreach. This assignment requires cultivation of a variety of news sources and providing news reporting that includes under-represented and diverse voices.
In Sonoma County, this area of local news coverage will include our Latino population, other people of color, LGBTQ community, our youth and our original residents, our Indigenous people. It can also include topics and stories of poverty, income inequality, social justice issues and other stories requiring increased cultural awareness.
The assemblage of reporting and storytelling will include both “every day” moments and larger events around government actions and changing policies. Assignments will include both hard-hitting breaking news accounts and coverage of community celebrations and accomplishments.
This position will be part of our local news team and will also include general news assignments as the day’s news dictates.
SoCoNews.org is a newly rebranded and transformed model for providing hyper-local news to a set of Sonoma County communities previously served by the four legacy newspapers owned by Sonoma West Publishers. These include the Cloverdale Reveille, The Healdsburg Tribune, Windsor Times and Sonoma West Times & News. SoCoNews is now a digital news operation where our local and original content is provided on our website (SoCoNews.org, SoCoLocalNews.org) and via daily e-newsletters, multiple social media channels and a weekly printed edition of The Healdsburg Tribune.
We seek a journalist who can report using multiple media formats, can meet tight deadlines, work collaborative with our small news team and lead our efforts in expanding our social justice, multi-cultural and accountability journalism.
Applicants should submit a cover letter and current resume to email@example.com. The deadline for applications is May 20, 2021.
