Job Description:

Give your summer internship experience the Dow Jones News Fund boost!

College juniors, seniors and graduate students interested in paid summer internships working in top newsrooms across the country should apply now to the Dow Jones News Fund (DJNF) for a summer experience like no other.

DJNF provides free hands-on, pre-internship training; weekly salaries of at least $450 for a minimum of 10 weeks; $1,500 scholarships; and access to the DJNF alumni network for mentoring and job connections.

Students choose among four programs (and can apply for more than one):

  • Data Journalism: Students attend a pre-internship training program taught by Investigative Reporters and Editors at the University of Missouri where they learn about Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, computer-assisted reporting and analyzing and cleaning data in order to tell rich, often hidden, stories. Interns apply these skills to reporting on education, government, criminal justice and economic issues.
  • Digital Media: Students attend a pre-internship training program led by Arizona State University’s Cronkite School where they learn how to stay ahead in our rapidly evolving media ecosystem, from analyzing web traffic to social media management and designing responsive websites to creating audio and video content. During the course of the program, the digital media interns create a multimedia package from scratch--check out the 2020 and 2019 projects.
  • Business Reporting: Students attend a pre-internship training to learn from business journalists and drill-down on finance, investing, labor issues and mergers and acquisitions before interning at respected newspapers, business journals, magazines and digital news services.
  • Multiplatform Editing: Students attend a pre-internship training program to hone their visual design, headline writing and line editing skills before beginning internships for some of the nation’s most respected media outlets.

DJNF covers travel, meals and lodging costs for interns to attend the training programs, and transportation to and from the internship. Interns are responsible for their housing and daily commuting costs during the internship. Click here to see a list of potential internship placements.

To apply for a DJNF internship, students must complete an online application, attach supporting documentation and take a timed online test by Nov. 9, 2020.

Application Form:
Students must complete an online application where you will be prompted to create your candidate profile and answer job-specific questions for each program. Applicants must also include: a 500-word essay; a résumé; an unofficial college transcript; and for business reporting internships three to five clips.

Students are required to complete a timed, one-hour test to be considered for internships. DJNF will email applicants a link to the test after the application is submitted. It is strongly recommended that students review previous tests available here.

College juniors, seniors and graduate students who are enrolled in school full-time as of the Nov. 9 deadline are eligible to apply for the college internship programs. This includes December graduates. Former professionals (those who have worked full-time on staff as a journalist for a year or more) in the U.S. or abroad are not eligible. International students already in the U.S. and with a visa are eligible.
