Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) is a member-supported public media network whose mission is to strengthen the civic and cultural bonds that unite Southern California's diverse communities by providing the highest quality news and information service on air at 89.3 KPCC, online at LAist.com and through KPCC In Person. Since our founding in 1999, SCPR has been a fast growing, innovative, multi-platform public service newsroom. This reporter will split their time between covering veterans and military affairs and criminal justice issues in our ambitious KPCC + LAist newsroom.
More veterans live in Southern California than anywhere else in the nation. This reporter will tell their stories from those who excel after discharge to those who falter. How is America fulfilling its commitment to veterans and their families? How are we falling short?
This reporter will also work alongside SCPR's public safety reporter in covering law enforcement, including its relationship with the communities it serves.
We want the veterans and criminal justice reporter to break news and affect policy. Ideally, this reporter will have military or law enforcement experience.
We're looking for a reporter who's excited to collaborate. The veterans-related reporting is part of a collaboration that covers national-interest military and veterans' issues in the Los Angeles area for public radio stations in several cities including Seattle, WA and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. For the veterans and military coverage, this reporter will edit with the collaboration editor based in NC.
When covering criminal justice issues in Southern California, this reporter will work closely with our public safety reporter and senior editor to coordinate and collaborate on coverage and story ideas. This reporter may be tapped to do work as part of our California Reporting Project collaboration'examining files related to officer misconduct and working with reporters in other California newsrooms.
Like all our reporters at SCPR, we expect this reporter will build engagement into the reporting process, actively listening to our audience for story ideas, reporting leads and expertise.

- Work with community members to identify their information needs
- Report with and for the community through various engagement tools
- Develop specialized knowledge of veterans and military affairs and criminal justice issues in Southern California.
- Originate, research, write and produce content for multiple platforms
- Become a subject area expert, comfortable joining our shows in interviews related to the beat.
- Assemble, edit and mix audio stories.
- Collaborate with reporters, editors and producers to amplify and distribute coverage.
- Produce digital stories with visual and interactive elements.
- Suggest and collaborate on special programming.
- Offer story ideas, guidance and subject matter insights to colleagues.
- Communicate regularly and effectively with editors across newsrooms
- Ensure that all stories comply with SCPR standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness and balance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
- Three or more years' experience reporting or similar experience, including experience covering a beat.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Strong writing and reporting skills.
- Ability to identify and originate stories, report accurately and quickly meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of beat and ability to develop sources.
- Demonstrated digital news, radio reporting and production skills.
- Demonstrated capacity to use public documents, Internet research and other reporting methods to provide independent material to inform stories.
- Ability to perform a variety of assignments well and completely.
- Commitment to learn and enact best journalism practices.
- Experience in or familiarity with public radio news.
- Ability to use sound, when available, to create scenes that engage the listener and convey the emotion of the story.
- Fully competent in use of recording and production equipment.
- Ability to work simultaneously on short and long-term projects.
- Ability to deliver stories with fully developed on-air style and originality in writing.
- Compelling storyteller.
- Ability to develop well-informed stories with multiple interviews and scene changes.
- Ability to deliver analytical reporting.
- Ability to deliver stories authoritatively, competently.
- Able to keep up with the state of technology on existing and emerging platforms.
- Has independent instinct for story construction, form and content.
- Able to generate strong pitches based on research and ideas.
- Ability to bring complicated ideas to air with moderate direction from Editor.
- Able to seek fresh directions in stories and think creatively.
- Able to tackle difficult projects.
- Become and remain a member in good standing of SAG-AFTRA by the thirtieth (30th) day of employment.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Knowledge of military and veterans issues.
- Professional on-air delivery.
- Experience using Lexis-Nexis and other research databases.
- Fluency in Spanish or other non-English languages commonly spoken in Southern California.
