Job Description:

The Investigative Reporter will use sourcing, data and intuition to find and break enterprise news stories, and create multi-part projects on air and in digital form. In addition to working on his or her own projects, the investigative reporter will also work with other reporters at CPR to increase the output of accountability investigative projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with the Investigative Editor to identify areas of interest and stories to pursue.
  • Works with reporters, producers, photographers and web designers throughout the newsroom to produce investigative work across all beats and on each of our programs or platforms.
  • Able to juggle long-term investigations and quick-turn projects off the news, as driven by events.
  • Will contribute to newsroom training opportunities to share techniques and build the toolkits of other reporters.
  • Works with outside news organizations on collaborative projects.
  • Able to travel, as needed, to get the story.
  • Non-standard working hours guaranteed. On call as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned, including on-air fundraising.
  • Follows CPR’s ethics guidelines, and has a track record of sound, ethical decision making in the reporting process.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Identification with the mission and purpose of Colorado Public Radio.
  • Proficient in data reporting and analysis. Deep experience in open records requests using state laws and FOIA.
  • Comfortable using Excel spreadsheets and relational database software to mine data for stories.
  • Knowledgeable in libel laws and experienced in working with legal teams.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in journalism with an emphasis on long-form and investigative reporting during at least part of that time.
  • BA/BS Degree.
