Job Description:

The managing editor will direct the day-to-day operations of a small but growing team of staff reporters and freelance contributors and help define and execute WyoFile’s broader editorial vision. They will also have the opportunity to contribute original reporting and commentary. The managing editor is a new role at WyoFile and affords exceptional opportunity for the right candidate to innovate and have a meaningful impact on WyoFile, Wyoming, and the broader community.

This position reports directly to WyoFile’s chief executive & editor.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing a remote team of staff reporters, columnists and freelance contributors

  • Developing, maintaining and fulfilling a weekly story budget, including setting and enforcing deadlines

  • Contributing to the evolution and execution of WyoFile’s editorial vision

  • Developing and maintaining a network of freelance contributors and a recruiting pipeline of future contributors / staffers

  • Collaborating with reporters and columnists through all stages of story development — from topic selection and story assignment through research, investigation, reporting, copy editing and layout

  • Generating story ideas

  • Creating original content, including original reporting and analysis, social media content, imagery etc.

  • Adapting WyoFile content for disparate platforms including email newsletter, social media and legacy print outlets, managing its distribution and moderating the resulting dialogue.

  • Working closely with WyoFile’s chief executive and editor to track, report on and respond to assorted performance metrics

  • Performing other duties as needed.

Position details

This is a full time position based in Lander, Wyoming — a bustling small town and outdoor recreation destination in the foothills of the Wind River Range, adjacent to the Wind River Indian Reservation.

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license. Occasional travel, primarily intrastate, will be required.

Skills:
The ideal candidate will:
Be a team-oriented leader and employee-focused supervisor with at least three years experience managing journalists.
Be an expert in the processes and techniques of news reporting and editing.
Have a track record of success as an investigative journalist or managing investigative journalism.
Employ uncompromising news judgement
Possess a magazine writer’s sense of narrative, a newspaper editor’s sense of urgency and a nose for a good story.
Exhibit exceptional writing ability and enjoy coaching the craft.
Be passionate about the role of civic news organizations in American society
Have a sharp eye for details
Adhere to the Society of Professional Journalists’ code of ethics.
