Story Producer, Pop-Up Magazine

Post Date:Jan 08, 2019Type:Full time
Start Date:Salary:
Location: United States - California - San Francisco Job Reference:
Job Description:

We are looking for talented editors/producers to hunt for fascinating reported story ideas and then help produce them for live audiences across the country. You will work with an eclectic mix of reporters and writers, radio producers, filmmakers, photographers, and anyone else with an incredible story to tell.

Pop-Up Magazine is a live magazine, a series of new, live-scored, multimedia stories performed by writers, radio producers, photographers, and filmmakers at large theaters across the country, like Lincoln Center and BAM Howard Gilman Opera House in New York, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, and the Warner Theatre and Lincoln Theater in Washington DC. We have collaborated on live magazine performances with Beck, ESPN, McSweeney’s, National Geographic, and the TED Conference. We also publish The California Sunday Magazine.

We produce three original touring shows a year, and our new special projects team is developing new kinds of live multimedia journalism-and-storytelling events, from one-night-only experiments to collaborations with other organizations and media companies. You will be assigned primarily to our touring show team or our special projects team—each team is adding a producer—but in either case, you will have opportunities to help make everything we do.

As a story producer, you will gather, pitch, and assign stories; team up with senior colleagues to edit them; and collaborate with colleagues on art and music direction. You should know where to find narrative, nonfiction stories and how to sense a really good one. You should be eager to build a wide network of potential contributors, and enjoy talking to them on the phone—and meeting lots of new people.

The ideal candidate could come from a variety of different backgrounds. You might be working in documentary film—we’re especially interested right now in film experience. Or theater. You might be a writer or editor at a smart culture site, news site, or print magazine, or a producer at a radio show or podcast. Pop-Up Magazine creates live, multimedia shows, but we do not expect candidates to have experience in all genres of media. Your work history should demonstrate talent and professional experience in at least one medium, and an interview should reveal good instincts for how other genres of media might be mixed together. You should be intrigued by all that liveness offers as a medium, but live event experience is not necessary.

You should be self-directed, smart about managing your time, hard-working, and organized. You should be quick to volunteer your help with any number of day-to-day tasks that come up at a new and growing company. You should have lots of ideas.

We expect to hire two people, and will consider both Senior Producer and Associate Producer candidates. You may be assigned to our touring show team, our special projects team, or both. The position requires a minimum of 2-3 years (Associate Producer) or 5-10 years (Senior Producer) writing, editing, directing, or producing for the web, radio, print, or film; solid research skills; lots of creativity; and an interest in pushing the boundaries of live journalism.

This position is full time, based in our San Francisco office, New York, Los Angeles, or Washington DC.

In all our work, diversity is really important to us.

To apply, submit a résumé and a thoughtful cover letter.
