The Nightside General Assignment Reporter will be a key member of an expanding public radio newsroom. The reporter will be tasked with developing original reporting, responding to breaking news and monitoring ongoing stories for developments. The primary responsibility of this job is to file newscast material and file stories for online. This person must be able to balance several stories simultaneously, react to breaking news and quickly file.
The hours for this position are:
- Sunday: 11am-7pm
- Monday-Thursday: 3pm-11pm
(Hours, of course, may need to be adjusted pending news and assignments)
The candidate must be able to generate story ideas on his/her own and be a passionate, curious and informed consumer of issues and topics relevant to Massachusetts. The ideal candidate will have experience with radio reporting including live reporting and producing. S/he should be an exceptional writer, understand how to find and tell a good radio story, a savvy user of digital media and have the ability to work within a growing newsroom, cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure. This position requires significant field reporting. As this person will be one of the first to be deployed on breaking news a valid driver's license is strongly desired.
S/he will have at least five years experience in radio, television or print reporting, and will understand the NPR style and demonstrate strong production experience and comfort with using a variety of audio editing software. The candidate must have a strong understanding of the principles of journalism and have a proven ability to present balanced reporting, fairness and fidelity to facts.
The Nightside General Assignment Reporter will report to the Managing Editor of Radio and work closely with the nightside team.
- Identify stories and generate, write and execute voicers, wraps and scripts for

80% Serve as general assignment nightside reporter identifying and producing content for newscasts. Occassionally adapt to longer feature reporting.
10% Write stories for WGBHNews.org and assist with social media.
