Job Description:

Slate is hiring an editor to design, build, and collaborate on interactives and data visualizations.

Interactives are vital to Slate’s coverage. Our projects take on a variety of topics, from politics to culture to science to sports, and range from charts and maps to games and puzzles to custom-built interactive tools. Some of our most exciting work in recent years, like The Atlantic Slave Trade in Two Minutes and The Year in Push Alerts, has used interactivity and visualization to engage our readers and help them understand the world better. Now we have a great-looking and lightning-fast new website and we want a brilliant, creative journalist-programmer to build great things on it, both alone and in collaboration with our writers and editors.

Slate is committed to excellence through diversity, which involves attracting talented people from diverse backgrounds and traditions. We encourage everyone to apply.

· Experience using database systems like MySQL, PostGreSQL, or MongoDB

· Experience crunching and wrangling data using Excel, R, or other statistical software

· Working knowledge of user experience, accessibility, and responsive design principles

· Demonstrated skill at information design and data presentation.

We’re also looking for:

· Sharp news judgment

· The ability to be self-directed and self-teaching

· A knack for coming up with smart, surprising ideas.

The position is full-time, on staff, with benefits, and can be located in either Slate’s New York or Washington, D.C., offices.
