About Boise State Public Radio

Based in the state capitol, Boise State Public Radio is the premier NPR affiliate in Idaho. With 18 transmitters and translators, it reaches 2/3rds of the state's population. The radio network serves a very loyal listener base from its all-digital studio headquarters, tucked in along the Boise River. The city of Boise is fast-growing and is ranked as one of the "most livable" cities in America. It features a historic downtown, with a vibrant arts scene and an active, outdoors lifestyle. There are hundreds of sunny days and miles of trails in the foothills above the city. Boise State Public Radio is expanding its news footprint, with new regional collaborations across the Mountain West, and is searching for an experienced manager to fill the role of News Director in an expanding newsroom.

Position Overview

The News Director supervises all aspects of the Boise State Public Radio news department, including assigning and editing stories for newscasts, planning features and news series, measuring and monitoring success, guiding the digital workflow, and creating public service programming.

The News Director supervises the news department staff, guides editorial coverage, and provides long-range department planning. The News Director also contributes to reporting, producing news spots, features, and interviews. This person also serves as a backup host for the newsmagazines and talk shows and would be available for live coverage and for voice-tracking pre-recorded segments. The News Director would be expected to work well with associated editorial staff, such as the Regional Journalism Centers (RJCs) and editorial partnerships with other media organizations.

This individual must have proven leadership skills, excellent editing and mentoring capability, and understand budgeting, personnel management, and the technical aspects of radio. In addition to having a firm understanding of the community service role of noncommercial broadcast journalism, he or she must also have solid news judgment – the ability to determine which stories are most informative and the greatest value to the communities the network serves. The ideal candidate will have six years of newsroom experience, with at least two years experience in management.

Salary is commensurate with experience, and the position includes an excellent benefits package.
