Editor-in-chief Position Job Description
The Progressive seeks an Editor-in-chief with the vision and expertise to shape and direct the editorial strategy of a national progressive bi-monthly print and online political magazine in a new media landscape.
The Progressive, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit which publishes The Progressive magazine, a voice of the progressive movement. A voice for peace, social justice, and the common good, The Progressive stands against militarism and the concentration of power in corporate hands, and champions the empowerment of the citizenry, peace, social and economic justice, civil liberties, human rights, a preserved environment, and a reinvigorated democracy. Its bedrock values are nonviolence and freedom of speech.
The Progressive presents voices of dissent and voices that are under-represented in mainstream media with a goal of championing grassroots progressive politics. The Progressive, Inc. also maintains the website progressive.org. It also runs the Progressive Media Project, which distributes op-eds to 450 newspapers around the country and abroad, and conducts writing clinics for activists and community leaders.
The Editor-in-chief works closely with the Publisher and the editorial team and is supervised by the Board of Directors. This a full-time salaried position based in Madison, Wisconsin with a starting salary of $65,000 annually. Compensation package includes: fully-covered health insurance, and a generous vacation and 401K plan. Experience in non-profit media, and 3+ years of experience in editing at a management level preferred.
The Editor-in-chief is responsible for supervising the editorial operations of The Progressive, Inc. The Editor-in-chief will ensure that The Progressive is part of the conversation on current events by writing, editing, and working with the editorial team to assign pieces for the magazine and website, as well as crafting a national media presence that best features our writers and editorial voice.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Supervise all editorial staff through working with the Publisher as part of the management team to lead the organization.
Oversee the editorial planning, design, and production of the magazine and website.
Report and write articles and other general editorial copy for the magazine and website.
Work with and assign freelance writers including rewriting, editing, and copyediting their material.
Instruct and supervise editorial interns on tasks involving writing and editing.
Monitor and keep in touch with activist events and organizations around the country.
Maintain and cultivate relationships with other media organizations.
Represent The Progressive on national broadcast media programs and attend events to represent the organization on a national level.
Additional tasks as needed to ensure the functions of the organization including participating in fundraising activities.
