In Search of editor for path-breaking news website

DC Witness is a website created to cover and track every homicide the District of Columbia, training the next generation of journalists, covering the stories that go unreported and developing unprecedented data journalism.

We are looking for a energetic editor, committed to the endangered art of beat reporting, and yet with an eye to the evolving media. It is the ideal job for the hard news reporter/editor tired of superficial journalism and the economic insecurity of traditional mainstream media who wants to be the part of building something new and wants to do the kind of in depth reporting rarely afforded in today’s media environment.

The main duties of  include:

  • Editing, publishing and scheduling all content on the DC Witness website; including maintenance of the core database.

  • Developing sources and building relationships with all those touched by homicides, from victims families to police, courts and city officials.

  • Developing new forms and approaches to tell the story of the plague of homicides and reach audiences.

  • Writing analytical and editorials based on the data produced.

  • Oversee production of monthly newsletter and other data.

  • Develop video and other multimedia content.

  • Train student journalists on the how-to’s of accurate court and homicide reporting, including interviewing techniques, AP style, understanding the court system and data journalism.

  • Ensure the integrity and accuracy of all data and content published on the website and database, and the responsiveness of the website.

  • Manage newsroom and newsroom budget.

  • Support fund-raising efforts.

A bachelor’s degree is prefered, but the most important prerequisite is a proven track record of hard news beat reporting and an interest in local news journalism.The candidate must have at least 3-5 years experience as a journalist, and a demonstrated ability to work independently and with vision.
