The Seattle Times, a family-owned, Pulitzer-Prize winning media company, is looking for a temporary music writer who can provide outstanding coverage of the vibrant Pacific Northwest music scene while keeping atop of national trends. The music writer will review national touring acts, write multiple weekly postings and columns on local and national music themes and respond to breaking news on the music beat. In addition, the writer will develop enterprise stories and ensure that all stories are fully optimized for digital presentation with related links, video and other components. Using metrics and social media, the writer will actively seek to build readership and deepen engagement. This demanding position requires superior organization and time-management skills, the ability to file quickly and accurately on deadline and working knowledge and interest in all genres of music. The 6-month, 28 hour/week post requires some nights and weekends.
Job Specifications and Requirements:
College graduate with a degree in journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Requires a minimum of three years of reporting experience, preferably on a daily newspaper or website.
Position requires use of personal vehicle.Employee is required to maintain a valid driver’s license as well as the following limits of liability insurance:$100,000 bodily injury (BI), $300,000 aggregate BI; $100,000 property damage (PD); or $300,000 single limit.
Supervision Received:Must be able to work independently but know when to inform or seek direction from supervisor or other editors.
Pressure of Work:High expectations for judgment about whether information is important, relevant, useful and interesting to readers.Must meet fast-paced deadlines.Must be accurate.
Working Conditions:Office can be noisy and job has frequent interruptions, requiring ability to maintain and sustain attention and effectively interact with people in extremely stressful situations.Individual ergonomic adjustments must be made to prevent RSI.
Scope:Use judgment to ensure a fair, balanced and complete report.Accept responsibility for helping to ensure the overall quality of news content.
