Job Description:
Purpose of Communication Specialist Position:

To assist in the development and implementation of communications support for various campaigns including organizing, political action, bargaining, and other activities.


Location:
        Oakland, California

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs a wide range of duties as assigned by SEIU-UHW, including, but not limited to the following:

1.        Assists in the development and implementation of strategies to improve the public image and visibility of SEIU-UHW.

2.        Helps implement and develop communications strategies and calendars for various campaigns within the local union.

3.        Writes op-eds, letters to the editor, background pieces, fact sheets, talking points, press kit materials, speeches, statements, leaflets, direct mail, and other collateral materials as needed for various campaigns.

4.        Assists campaign leads in the implementation of communications strategies for campaign projects.

5.        Assists with communications training for members and staff.

6.        Provides support for local leaders and senior staff attending campaign or other events.

7.        Monitors media coverage of various campaigns, maintains clipping files, makes recommendations on ways to improve media coverage.

8.        Works with digital communications staff to develop e-mail, Web sites, SMS communications, robo calls, phone banking, and other digital communications as needed.

9.        Must be available for frequent travel with overnight stays and weekend work required. Long and irregular hours.

10.        Performs other duties as required to assist the Communications Department.


Scope and Nature of Supervision:

Must be able to act and organize time with extreme independence.

A high level of judgment, ability to take initiative and work independently; must be able to work with elected leaders, members and staff in complex and sometimes political situations.

Reports to the Communications Director or other Communications Department managers.

Skills:
Educational Background:

Bachelor's Degree in communications-related field preferred.


Previous Work Experience(s):

Two years' experience in media relations or public affairs.

Demonstrated experience in performing pro-active media outreach, maintaining good working relationships with journalists, and generating positive media coverage.

Must be able to handle multiple assignments and meet established deadlines.

Previous experience with the labor movement or other advocacy organizations preferred.


Specialized Knowledge and Training:

Excellent writing skills. Writing test required.

Working knowledge of electronic and print media systems; digital communications; knowledge of advertising techniques preferred. Familiarity with all aspects of literature production process required. Familiarity with organizing and political campaign strategies preferred. Bilingual skills preferred.
