Why are you thinking of jumping to the big screen? More money? More glam? A bit of both? Your parents want you to? Or do you think you'll have a bigger impact on CNN than at the LA Times?
You know, I've thought about it a bit. I love print, I work for the largest paper in Virginia and cover the Education beat, so I'm pleased in my work. But, people always tell me I should do tv. I guess they see an attractive young women and think tv And to be honest I think I'd be good at it. But I don't know where to start. How can I make the transition? I've thought about taking a Broadcast class, but is that enough? I know you need a tape to even think about interviews.
Do you work at the Pilot? If so, doesn't your paper have some sort of partnership with one of the local TV stations? I know that the Daily Press in Newport News is affiliated with WAVE-TV.
From what I know, it's certainly doable. You can either go to a small market- learn the ropes and work your way up to a bigger pond. Or some people that I've known have jumped straight to the networks from newpapers. It seems that they are looking for good reporters. Anyone have knowledge about how hard the jump is?
I know that John Yang jumped from the Washington Post to ABC, I believe. Pierre Thomas (who I 'think' works for CNN) did the same. You should talk to them.
Also, Ann Curry of the Today Show jumped from print to broadcast. Transitioning from one to another depends on which route you want to take -- go from small pond and work one's way up -- or if you have a specialty beat (like John Yang) and going straight to the network.
